What makes a sticker waterproof

A sticker survives water when the water never touches the ink. Ours are printed on vinyl and then sealed under a UV laminate, so the printed layer is sealed between the laminate and the vinyl. Rain beads off, a spilled coffee wipes away, and a wash cycle does not lift the colour.

The vinyl itself does not absorb water either, which is what keeps a sticker flat and attached: a paper sticker swells, wrinkles and lets go at the edges after its first soaking, while laminated vinyl looks the same after the hundredth.

Where waterproof stickers earn their keep

Coolers and lunch boxes that sit in melting ice, car windows that go through the car wash, bike frames and helmets that ride through rain, toolboxes and equipment that live outside, mailboxes and gates, and the water bottles and tumblers that go through the sink every day.

Outdoors the sticker is fighting the sun as much as the rain. The laminate is UV resistant, and the vinyl is rated for three to five years outdoors, so the colours hold in a window or on a truck that is parked in full sun.

Care: the first 24 hours and after

Waterproof starts once the adhesive has cured. Apply on a clean, dry surface — wipe it with rubbing alcohol first — at room temperature, press from the middle out, then keep the sticker dry for about 24 hours while the bond reaches full strength.

After that it is dishwasher safe. The print and laminate survive repeated cycles, but gentler is better for the edges: top rack, normal cycle, no heated dry, and hand washing with mild soap is gentlest of all. Skip abrasive sponges and solvents such as acetone, which can dull the laminate. On a car, give it 48 hours before a pressure washer comes near it.

Choosing size, shape and finish for wet places

Fewer corners means fewer edges for water and handling to work under, so smooth die cut outlines, circles and rounded-corner labels are the safest shapes for items that are washed every day. Keep a small, even border around the design rather than spiky points.

Gloss and matte are equally waterproof; clear vinyl is too, and works when the surface behind should show. This page opens on a 3″ gloss die cut at 100 pieces — change any of it above, or enter a custom size from 1″ to 36″.
